Amazon’s Newest Venture: A Walmart-Like Supercenter in Illinois

Amazon is set to expand its physical retail presence with a massive supercenter in Orland Park, Illinois. The Orland Park Plan Commission recently approved Amazon’s proposal for a 229,000-square foot retail center on 35 acres of land, resembling a Walmart-style store, as per The Information.

This innovative development will house a brick-and-mortar supercenter offering groceries, general merchandise, and prepared foods. Additionally, it will function as an Amazon fulfillment center, combining a department store concept with a warehouse in the back. Customers will have the convenience of picking up their Amazon orders on-site.

While this may seem like a bold move, Amazon has actually been exploring physical retail for some time. In recent years, the company has closed many of its brick-and-mortar stores, including all bookstores, 4-star shops, and Pop Up stores in 2022, as well as its Amazon Style clothing stores in 2023. Despite focusing on Whole Foods Market, acquired in 2017, Amazon’s interest in physical retail remains strong.
