Amazon's once-hailed fantasy MMO New World will vanish from servers in a year's time

The End of an Era: Amazon’s New World MMO

Amazon’s highly anticipated colonial fantasy MMO, New World, has been officially discontinued for purchase as of yesterday. The game will be permanently taken offline on January 31, 2027, in a decision announced by the publishers. This news comes after the release of the game’s final major update in October and amidst significant layoffs at Amazon.

The Rise and Fall of New World

New World, along with the ill-fated Crucible and Breakaway, was a key component of Amazon’s ambitious foray into the gaming industry. Initially announced in 2016, the game faced multiple delays due to reported corporate dysfunction within Amazon’s studio empire. It finally launched out of beta in 2021, with its storyline concluding in 2022.

Despite an initial surge of interest with over 700,000 players on Steam on release day, New World experienced a rapid decline in player numbers, losing over 90% of its player base within months. Critics praised the game for its fresh take on MMO gameplay but noted its grindy nature and familiar mechanics.

A Bittersweet Farewell

While some were drawn to New World’s swashbuckling world and crafting mechanics, others remained skeptical of its association with Amazon and its convoluted settler politics. As the game prepares to sunset, developers are facing layoffs, marking the end of an era for the MMO.

Despite the impending closure, the game’s live service will continue until the servers are shut down, offering recurring world bosses and bonus events. Players can still purchase in-game currencies until July 20, 2026, although refunds are not available for these transactions.

Gratitude and Reflection

In a heartfelt message to the player community, the developers expressed their gratitude for the dedication and passion shown by players throughout the game’s lifespan. They acknowledged the collaborative effort in crafting the world of Aeternum and expressed sadness at bidding farewell to the game.

As New World veterans come to terms with the end of their gaming journey, reminiscing on the highs and lows of their time in Aeternum, the gaming community reflects on the impact of the MMO and its legacy within the industry.
