Apple’s new AirTag has more range and a better speaker

Apple Unveils New AirTag with Enhanced Features

Apple has introduced a new AirTag featuring an upgraded ultra wideband chip, enabling more precise location tracking. Priced at $29 for one or $99 for a four-pack, the new AirTag retains the same affordability as its predecessor. The enhanced chip powers Apple’s Precision Finding feature, which utilizes haptic, visual, and audio feedback to assist users in locating items from even greater distances, up to 50 percent farther away.

Improved Speaker and Bluetooth Connectivity

In addition to the advanced location tracking capabilities, the new AirTag boasts a 50 percent louder speaker according to Apple. The updated Bluetooth chip extends the range at which items can be located. Users can leverage the Precision Finding feature with an Apple Watch Series 9 or later, or Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, running on watchOS 26.2.1.

Enhanced Compatibility and Security Features

The new AirTag is fully compatible with all existing accessories. Apple emphasizes that the AirTag does not store location data or history on the device itself. Communication with the Find My network is secured through end-to-end encryption. The AirTag includes safeguards against unauthorized tracking, such as cross-platform alerts and dynamic Bluetooth identifiers that change regularly. In collaboration with Google, Apple introduced an industry standard in 2023 to help prevent excessive AirTag tracking.
