Microsoft Unveils Maia 200 AI Chip, Promising Superior Performance

Microsoft has officially introduced the Maia 200, the successor to its first in-house AI chip, the Maia 100. The Maia 200, built on TSMC’s cutting-edge 3nm process, boasts impressive performance metrics. According to Microsoft, this AI accelerator delivers three times the FP4 performance of Amazon’s Trainium and exceeds Google’s TPU in FP8 performance.

Featuring over 100 billion transistors, each Maia 200 chip is designed to handle large-scale AI workloads with ease. Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of Microsoft’s Cloud and AI division, expressed confidence in the chip’s capabilities, stating that it can efficiently run today’s largest models and accommodate even larger models in the future.

Microsoft’s strategic plans for the Maia 200 include hosting OpenAI’s GPT-5.2 model and other AI models for Microsoft Foundry and Microsoft 365 Copilot. Guthrie highlighted the efficiency of the Maia 200 as the most efficient inference system ever deployed by Microsoft, offering 30% better performance per dollar compared to existing hardware.

In a bid to outperform its Big Tech rivals, Microsoft is positioning itself as a leader in AI innovation. The company’s Superintelligence team will be the first to leverage the Maia 200 chips, with plans to extend access to academics, developers, AI labs, and open-source contributors through an early preview of the Maia 200 software development kit.

Microsoft is wasting no time in deploying the Maia 200 chips, starting with the Azure US Central data center region and expanding to additional regions in the near future. While competitors like Amazon and Google are also working on next-generation AI chips, Microsoft’s latest offering positions it as a frontrunner in the AI hardware race.
