Amazon shifts grocery strategy, doubling down on Whole Foods and delivery services
Amazon Shelves Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh Stores
Amazon has announced the closure of all its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh locations, totaling 72 stores nationwide. The company is shifting its focus to Whole Foods Market locations and grocery delivery from Amazon.com.
After a decade of experimenting with Amazon-branded grocery and convenience stores, the company cited challenges in creating a unique customer experience with a sustainable economic model for large-scale expansion.
Most Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go locations will close this Sunday, with California stores remaining open for an additional 45 days due to state regulations.
Amazon emphasized that the move is a strategic shift rather than a retreat from the grocery sector, highlighting the success of Whole Foods and same-day perishable delivery.
The closure will impact all 57 Amazon Fresh and 15 remaining Amazon Go stores. Some Amazon Fresh stores may reopen as new Whole Foods locations in the future.
Amazon is providing severance packages to affected employees, offering 90 days of full pay and benefits while assisting in transitioning to other roles within the company.
Whole Foods Becomes Amazon’s Sole Physical Store Brand
With the closure of Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores, Whole Foods will be Amazon’s only physical store brand in the U.S. This marks the end of a chapter that began with Amazon’s entry into brick-and-mortar retail a decade ago.
Amazon plans to maintain a hybrid Amazon grocery store in Chicago and a “store within a store” format at a Pennsylvania Whole Foods location.
While closing some stores, Amazon continues to explore new concepts in physical retail, hinting at potential future Amazon-branded store formats.
Focus on Whole Foods and Online Grocery Delivery
Amazon’s Fresh grocery delivery service, launched in Seattle in 2007, paved the way for its expansion in the challenging grocery sector. The company now ranks among the top three grocers in the U.S., with significant sales and customer base.
Since acquiring Whole Foods in 2017, Amazon has seen a 40% increase in sales and plans to open more stores in the coming years. The company is also expanding its Same-Day Delivery service for fresh groceries across the U.S.
