Microsoft Considers Adding Top Menu Bar to Windows 11

The PowerToys team at Microsoft is exploring the idea of introducing a top menu bar for Windows 11, similar to those found in Linux, macOS, and older versions of Windows. Referred to as the Command Palette Dock, this optional user interface would offer quick access to various tools, system resource monitoring, and more.

Customizable Dock Design

Microsoft has shared concept images of the proposed menu bar and is seeking input from users on the potential utility of such a feature. Niels Laute, a senior product manager at Microsoft, describes the dock as highly configurable, with options to position it at the top, left, right, or bottom of the screen. Users can also pin extensions to three distinct regions within the dock: start, center, and end.

Enhanced Customization Options

Should Microsoft move forward with the development of this dock, it will include customization features for adjusting the background, style, and overall theme. Users will have the ability to rearrange extensions between different dock regions and pin them as desired.

Complementary Features

The Command Palette Dock is intended to complement Microsoft’s existing Command Palette launcher, which was introduced last year. Similar to Apple’s Spotlight in macOS, the Command Palette allows for quick access to commands, applications, and development tools.

Feedback and Development

Microsoft is currently seeking feedback on this proposed feature. Developers can experiment with an early version of the dock by importing a project from Microsoft’s PowerToys GitHub repository into Visual Studio.
