Web of Trouble: Teens Charged with London Transport Hack
Teenagers Charged in Cyberattack on London’s Public Transportation Network
In August 2024, two teenagers have been accused of orchestrating a cyberattack on London’s public transportation network. Investigators in the UK have linked the “network intrusion” to the Scattered Spider online criminal group. The attack on Transport for London (TfL) resulted in significant disruption and financial losses, according to Paul Foster, who leads the National Crime Agency’s cyber crime unit.
Arrests and Charges
On Tuesday, Thalha Jubair, 19, and Owen Flowers, 18, were taken into custody at their residences. Both individuals have been charged under the Computer Misuse Act for allegedly conspiring to carry out an unauthorized act against TfL. The Scattered Spider group, known for comprising hackers from the US and UK, has also been linked to cyberattacks on MGM, Caesars Entertainment, and Marks & Spencer.
Warning from Authorities
Earlier this year, the National Crime Agency issued a caution about the rising threat posed by cyber criminals in the UK and other English-speaking nations, with Scattered Spider serving as a prominent example. Paul Foster stressed the significance of the charges filed against the two teenagers, emphasizing the extensive and intricate nature of the investigation.
