Former Google Cloud customer chief takes on role as Microsoft’s security leader

In a significant move, Microsoft has appointed Hayete Gallot as the new Executive Vice President of Security. Gallot, who previously served at Microsoft before joining Google Cloud’s customer experience team, will now report directly to CEO Satya Nadella.

Following Gallot’s appointment, Charlie Bell, the former security chief at Microsoft, will transition to a new position focusing on engineering quality. Nadella mentioned in an internal memo that this transition has been planned for some time, aligning with Bell’s aspiration to shift from organizational leadership to a role as an individual contributor.

Bell, who led Microsoft’s security, compliance, and identity teams for nearly five years, faced challenges as the company grappled with security issues. A critical report from the Cyber Safety Review Board in 2024 highlighted the inadequacy of Microsoft’s security culture, calling for a comprehensive overhaul.

Gallot’s return signifies a renewed emphasis on security at Microsoft, particularly as the company navigates the AI era. With extensive experience spanning 16 years at Microsoft in engineering and sales leadership roles, Gallot is well-positioned to drive product innovation while prioritizing customer value. Nadella commended her unique approach that blends product development with customer-centricity, underscoring the importance of security in today’s landscape.
