Confronting the Challenges of Artificial Intelligence: John Ternus’ Journey

John Ternus’ first big problem is AI

Apple made waves last year for not focusing on AI at WWDC, but now, hardware executive John Ternus is set to take the reins as CEO, with no mention of AI in the official announcement.

Ternus, Apple’s SVP of hardware engineering, will succeed Tim Cook as CEO on September 1st. With a 25-year tenure at Apple, Ternus is the first CEO from a hardware background in three decades. Despite his impressive track record with Apple products, the company’s announcement did not touch on his AI plans or experience.

Apple has lagged behind competitors in the AI race, notably with its AI assistant Siri falling short of Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic offerings. While Microsoft and Google have embraced AI integration, Apple has faced criticism for its attempts, such as with Apple Intelligence’s notification summaries.

Microsoft’s aggressive AI push with Windows 11, including features like Copilot, resulted in user backlash and a reevaluation of their strategy. In contrast, Apple has been cautious in its approach, aiming for thoughtful and well-designed AI integration.

While Apple has a history of entering product categories late but excelling, its promises in the AI space have yet to materialize. Features like live translation and personalization for Siri have been delayed, leaving users waiting for updates that have yet to arrive.

Apple’s reliance on OpenAI’s ChatGPT and recent partnership with Google for AI foundation models signal a late but necessary move in the AI landscape. The question now is whether the new Siri powered by Gemini technology will launch by WWDC 2026 under Ternus’ leadership.

Ternus, known for maintaining Apple products, faces the challenge of steering the tech giant into a new AI era. With competitors advancing rapidly, Apple must not only catch up but also strive to lead the way in AI innovation.
