Digital Evolution: Testing Xbox’s Game Collection Digitization Feature
Microsoft to Introduce Disc-to-Digital Feature for Xbox Games
In a move following Sony, Microsoft is set to cease production of physical discs for Xbox games. However, rather than abandoning physical discs altogether, sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans reveal that the company has been quietly developing a disc-to-digital feature. This feature will enable Xbox owners to convert their existing physical game collections into digital copies.
Recently, Xbox employees began testing the new feature, prompted by references to “enable Disc2Digital” found in the Xbox PC app code back in May. The disc-to-digital feature is expected to support Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs exclusively, excluding those for the Xbox 360 or original Xbox consoles.
The process of obtaining a digital copy of a game involves inserting a compatible disc, installing the game, and playing it. Users will need a Microsoft account on their Xbox console, which will grant them a digital entitlement for physical games. This entitlement is linked to the specific disc and can be transferred between accounts if the physical game is shared with a friend or used on a different Xbox profile.
The digital entitlement for a physical Xbox game is comparable to purchasing the title from Microsoft’s digital store. If the game is available on Xbox Cloud Gaming and the user has a Game Pass subscription, they can stream it. Additionally, Xbox Play Anywhere titles can be accessed on PCs and handheld devices.
The Xbox disc-to-digital feature will also support bundled console discs and multi-disc titles, providing access to all content typically offered by the disc, including downloadable content. However, some Xbox One discs may not be compatible with this feature due to differences in manufacturing processes.
After digitization, discs will continue to function, and the digital entitlement will only be lost if the disc is lent to someone else or sold. Microsoft is currently conducting internal testing on this feature, with more details expected to be announced in the near future.
While it remains uncertain whether the next-generation Xbox, codenamed Project Helix, will include a built-in disc drive, the disc-to-digital feature could prove invaluable for existing Xbox owners looking to digitize their game collections ahead of future console releases.
