Protecting Your Data: Avoiding Costly Mistakes
Samsung has taken a significant step in enhancing the security features of its Galaxy smartphones. Unlike Google’s Android 17, which allows 20 attempts for entering the PIN, Samsung now limits the number of attempts to 20, making it more challenging for unauthorized access. It’s crucial to understand that this count includes all possible PIN entries, and incorrect entries do not reset after a waiting period.
This update requires Samsung Galaxy users to be more cautious about remembering their PIN codes in the future. By implementing this change, Samsung aims to prevent attackers from gaining access to stolen smartphones through brute-force methods like trying out random codes.

Another notable change is the revised time intervals between consecutive failed attempts. Following five failed attempts, a one-minute wait is required before entering the PIN again. The waiting period increases to five minutes after six attempts, 15 minutes after seven attempts, 30 minutes after eight attempts, and 90 minutes after nine attempts.
If ten failed attempts are made, a four-hour wait is imposed before another try. Subsequent failed attempts result in longer waiting periods, with a 12-hour wait after 11 failed attempts and a 24-hour wait after 12 failed attempts, providing ample warning and reflection time.
Your fingerprint may not always suffice
Users who rely solely on their fingerprint to unlock their Samsung devices should be cautious. After 72 hours or a system restart, the device will prompt for a PIN entry, even if fingerprint authentication was previously used. Therefore, regular system updates and restarts are recommended to avoid forgetting the PIN.
Following the NSA’s advice of a weekly system restart can help users maintain familiarity with their PIN codes and ensure uninterrupted access to their smartphones.
