Article Summary

  • The first dedicated AMG high-performance electric model accelerates to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 2.4 seconds.
  • Its battery pack supports 600 kW charging, enabling 286 miles (460 kilometers) of range after only 10 minutes.
  • Despite being purely electric, it delivers a “highly authentic AMG signature V8 sound experience.”

Mercedes’ performance division has been producing electric vehicles for some time, but this marks the first AMG developed specifically as an EV. The new GT 4-Door Coupe from Affalterbach represents a bold move as it replaces the previous V8-powered model. The company is confident in its ability to persuade customers to transition from a powerful eight-cylinder machine to a tri-motor beast.

Built on the bespoke AMG.EA platform, the new “coupe” retains the sedan configuration of its predecessor, albeit with a five-door liftback design due to its tailgate. Stylistically, it closely resembles last year’s AMG GT XX concept, maintaining a striking appearance.

Most Aggressive-Looking EV Yet?

The vehicle boasts an imposing faux grille with vertical slats, featuring prominent three-pointed stars in the headlights and taillights. Light bars at both ends accentuate its width, while wheel options extend up to 21 inches. In a nod to the Porsche Taycan, AMG has incorporated various aerodynamic elements, including an active diffuser.

Despite housing a substantial 106-kWh battery pack, the new GT 4-Door Coupe sits nearly 1.6 inches lower to the ground than its V8 predecessor. Coupled with a sleek windshield and fastback-style profile, it exudes a sporty aura uncommon in four-door vehicles.

The interior design is likely to spark debate, featuring a dominant triple-screen layout with robust bezels. A 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster complements a 14-inch infotainment screen and a 14-inch passenger display. Most functions are accessible through the central display, with three physical knobs for driver-controlled adjustments.

While promotional images showcase a four-seat configuration with individual rear seats, Mercedes-AMG plans to offer a five-seat option with a three-person rear bench. With its tailgate, accessing the cargo area is convenient. The high-performance EV provides 507 liters of cargo space with the rear seats up, and an additional 62 liters in the front trunk.

Measuring 5094 millimeters or 200.5 inches in length, the new GT 4-Door Coupe stands apart from upcoming electric M3 models. The AMG flagship EV competes more closely with a potential electric M5 from BMW. Currently, Mercedes equips its flagship EV with three motors and standard all-wheel drive.

Impressive Power And Performance

The base GT 55 version delivers 805 horsepower and a substantial 1,800 Newton-meters (1,328 pound-feet) of torque. This power translates to a rapid acceleration of 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 2.8 seconds and 124 mph (200 km/h) in 9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 186 mph (300 km/h).

Opting for the GT 63 model increases output to 1,153 hp and 2,000 Nm (1,475 lb-ft) of torque. The acceleration figures are even more impressive, with a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint completed in 2.4 seconds and a 0-124 mph (0-200 km/h) dash in just 6.8 seconds, culminating in a top speed of 186 mph (300 km/h).

Aside from its jaw-dropping performance, the GT 4-Door Coupe shines as a charging marvel. The battery’s 600-kW charging capability ensures a range of 286 miles (460 kilometers) in just 10 minutes. On a full charge, Mercedes-AMG estimates a range exceeding 435 miles (700 kilometers) on the WLTP cycle.

From its design to technical specifications, the GT 4-Door Coupe emerges as a compelling EV in recent times. To enhance the driving experience, Mercedes integrates a “highly authentic, AMG signature V8 sound experience” to maintain the essence of the twin-turbo 4.0-liter engine.

Pricing details are yet to be disclosed, but indications suggest it will align with the first-generation model. The previous V8-powered variant commenced around $160,000, while the base inline-six version started at slightly over $100,000.
