SS&C Blue Prism: On the journey from RPA to agentic automation

Transitioning from RPA to Agentic AI with SS&C Blue Prism

Many organizations still heavily rely on the rigid structures of robotic process automation (RPA), making the shift towards agentic AI for automation a daunting prospect. SS&C Blue Prism, however, offers guidance and support to help customers smoothly transition from RPA to agentic automation at a comfortable pace.

Steven Colquitt, VP Software Engineering at SS&C Blue Prism, emphasizes the necessity of this move due to the increasing complexity of modern workflows. Traditional RPA is no longer sufficient to handle unstructured data from diverse sources, reflecting real-world interactions that are non-deterministic in nature. Colquitt notes that inputs, outcomes, and decisions in such scenarios are dynamic and context-dependent.

Brian Halpin, Managing Director of Automation at SS&C Blue Prism, provides an example of the level of reasoning required in agentic AI by mentioning a credit agreement where multiple answers are needed. He highlights the significance of using large language models (LLMs) for such tasks.

Halpin stresses that the journey from RPA to agentic AI is ongoing. Unlike traditional RPA, agentic AI involves giving an AI agent the desired outcome without providing step-by-step instructions. While the market is moving towards autonomous workflows driven by agentic AI, challenges related to trust, regulations, and stability need to be addressed first.

SS&C Blue Prism aims to upgrade its numerous customers, who have already implemented automated processes, into the realm of AI. The company plans to introduce new technology that enables organizations to integrate AI agents seamlessly into workflows and assist with orchestration.

At the recent TechEx Global event, part of the Intelligent Automation conference, SS&C Blue Prism shared insights into their journey, emphasizing their role as one of the largest users of RPA globally. With thousands of digital workers deployed and significant cost savings achieved, the company is paving the way for AI integration in automation processes.
