Introducing Dyson’s Slim PencilWash: The Ultimate Wet Floor Cleaner

Dyson has introduced a new slim and agile wet floor cleaner in the UK known as the PencilWash, retailing at £299.99.

You can purchase your own directly from Dyson. The product will be released on March 14 in the US at a price of $349. It resembles Dyson’s PencilVac vacuum, available from Dyson UK for £429.99 and Dyson US for $449.99.

While these prices are reasonable for a Dyson device, they might seem steep for a mop. Nonetheless, the investment could prove worthwhile.

The PencilWash is sleek, with a 38mm handle and a weight of 2.2kg (4.85lbs). Despite its slender design, it can clean up to 100m² of flooring before requiring a recharge. Additionally, it features a removable battery for extended cleaning sessions.

Both the PencilWash and PencilVac are driven by Dyson’s compact Hyperdymium motor, measuring only 28mm in diameter. This design allows for their slim profiles. However, the PencilWash holds more appeal to me compared to the PencilVac.

Unlike a vacuum, a mop like the PencilWash faces fewer challenges in maintaining a slim profile. Vacuums need to handle various debris and hair, making narrow designs prone to clogging. Even models with hair-removing rollers, like the Fluffycones on the PencilVac, may struggle with pet or human hair.

Conversely, the PencilWash does not draw up water or debris through the handle. Instead, it features a 300ml clean water tank at the base, while dirty water and debris are ejected into a second container with each roller rotation, simplifying emptying and cleaning.

The PencilWash employs a high-density microfibre roller for effective stain removal and offers two drying modes to facilitate quick floor drying.

In my experience with wet vacuums, weight and maneuverability are major concerns. While these tools eliminate the mess of manual mopping, they often lack agility. They struggle to reach room edges, navigate under furniture, and have poor maneuverability. This can be discouraging for smaller homes or apartments.

Conversely, the PencilWash prioritizes compactness and maneuverability, allowing for single-handed use and near-flat positioning (170°) to reach under furniture.
