Collaboration of Giants: Epic and Google Unite for Innovative ‘Metaverse’ Apps
Epic Games and Google Reach Agreement on Metaverse Browsers
After burying the hatchet, Epic Games and Google have come to an agreement that goes beyond their alignment on Google’s changes to app stores. Documents released today unveil their collaboration on a new class of apps known as “metaverse browsers,” as indicated in a redacted section of a revised binding term sheet.
Although the term “metaverse” has lost popularity, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has long been a proponent of the concept and its potential in the future. For instance, Epic’s Fortnite is considered by some to be a significant iteration of a metaverse. Previous discussions between Epic and Google have also touched on the metaverse, such as in January during talks about an $800 million Unreal Engine deal where Sweeney mentioned its relation to the metaverse.
Details about the nature of metaverse browsers remain obscured in the redacted term sheet. However, visible information suggests that these browsers will have specific functionalities.
In a recent blog post addressing Google’s updates, Epic hinted at Google’s commitment to supporting the open metaverse in the future.
When contacted for comments, Epic’s Natalie Munoz and Google’s Dan Jackson declined to provide further information to The Verge.
