Some Google Home Speakers caught downloading hundreds of gigs of data

Google Home Speaker Owners Facing Data Download Bug

A significant number of Google Home Speaker users have recently encountered a troubling issue where their devices are unknowingly downloading massive amounts of data in the background. This bug, first highlighted by 9to5Google and discussed by various Reddit users, seems to stem from a failure to properly install a firmware update, with one Reddit user discovering that their device was consuming over 200GB of data daily.

Fortunately, Google has acknowledged the issue and announced that a solution is already being rolled out to address it for affected users, as per a statement provided to 9to5Google. While most reports are linked to the latest Google Home Speaker model, the full extent of the problem remains unknown. We have reached out to Google for further details on the cause and the devices impacted.

Our colleague Tom Warren has confirmed that his own speaker is not affected, and 9to5Google has documented another Home Speaker in a different household that only downloaded 2GB of data in the past month, contrasting with the 132GB consumed by a device experiencing the bug over the same period. This situation raises concerns for users with limited data plans, as the bug could rapidly deplete their allocated data without their knowledge unless they actively monitor their device’s data usage.
