Safe and Clean Cities: How City Detect’s AI Technology is Transforming Urban Safety and Sanitation
Revolutionizing Urban Monitoring with AI: City Detect Secures $13 Million in Series A Funding
City Detect, a cutting-edge company utilizing vision AI technology to assist local governments in monitoring the condition of buildings and neighborhoods, recently announced a significant milestone. The company closed a $13 million Series A funding round, with Prudence Venture Capital leading the investment.
Founded in 2021, City Detect was established by Gavin Baum-Blake, who currently serves as the CEO. The inspiration behind the company stemmed from the observation that many cities were struggling to combat issues like “urban blight and decay.” To address this challenge, City Detect leverages advanced computer vision and AI tools to help municipalities identify and address such problems effectively.
The innovative approach adopted by City Detect involves mounting cameras on public vehicles such as garbage trucks and street sweepers. As these vehicles traverse through city streets, they capture images of surrounding buildings, which are then analyzed using computer vision technology. This process is akin to Google Maps Street View but with a specific focus on ensuring building compliance with regulations.
According to Baum-Blake, City Detect’s technology can detect various issues such as graffiti, illegal dumping, and litter accumulation alongside roads. Upon identifying these issues, the company collaborates with local authorities to address them promptly, often dispatching cleanup crews to resolve the problems efficiently.
Unlike traditional methods that rely heavily on manual inspections, City Detect’s automated approach allows for the rapid assessment of thousands of buildings per week. Baum-Blake emphasized the significant efficiency gains achieved through their technology compared to conventional practices.
One key aspect of City Detect’s solution is its commitment to privacy and accuracy. The patented technology ensures that faces and license plates are always blurred in images for privacy protection. Additionally, the system can differentiate between street art and vandalism, aiding governments in holding landlords accountable for property maintenance.
