Volkswagen ID. Cross: Unveiling the Electric T-Cross SUV
Volkswagen Unveils Details About ID. Cross, an Affordable Electric City SUV
Volkswagen has recently shared some insights into the upcoming ID. Cross, an affordable electric city SUV. The vehicle is based on the updated front-wheel drive MEB+ architecture, featuring enhanced batteries, support for front-wheel drive models, redesigned front and rear axles, and a more rigid anti-roll bar.
Upon its launch, the ID. Cross will offer three motor options, delivering 85kW, 99kW, or 155kW/290Nm to the front wheels. While these motors will also be available on the ID. Polo, the ID. Cross will not include the 165kW unit earmarked for the ID. Polo GTI.
Customers will have the choice between two battery capacities: a 37kWh (net) pack supporting DC fast charging up to 90kW, and a 52kWh battery capable of DC charging up to 105kW.
The dimensions of the ID. Cross are specified as 4153mm in length, 1794mm in width, 1581mm in height, with a 2601mm wheelbase. The vehicle’s boot space is reported to be 475L, expanding to 1340L when the rear seats are folded. Additionally, it offers a frunk with a capacity of 22L and a towing capacity rated at 1200kg.
Expected to hit the European market in the third quarter of this year, the ID. Cross will have a starting price around €28,000 (A$45,600). In comparison, the Renault 4 E-Tech begins at €29,500 (A$48,000) in Germany for the base model with a 90kW motor and a 40kWh battery pack, indicating that the ID. Cross will have a premium of approximately €3000 (A$4900) over the T-Cross.
The production version of the ID. Cross closely resembles last year’s concept car, maintaining the overall silhouette and key design elements. The vehicle’s design features have been slightly refined, with changes to the wheel arches, surfacing, and detailing, giving it a more modern look.
Inside, the ID. Cross is expected to include physical buttons on the steering wheel spokes, dashboard, and center console, a departure from the capacitive buttons and sliders found in earlier models. The cabin design is likely to mirror that of the ID. Polo, with a focus on digital displays and customizable features.
Overall, Volkswagen’s ID. Cross presents an enticing option for those looking to transition to electric vehicles, offering a blend of practicality, performance, and affordability in a compact SUV package.
