BMW Confirms Incoming i3 EV Sedan Will Replace Current i4 After 2026

BMW executives have recently unveiled their plans for the next generation of Neue Klasse vehicles, introducing the i3 sedan as a battery-powered counterpart to the iconic 3-series. This new model will join the iX3 SUV in BMW’s lineup, offering customers a sleek and eco-friendly option in the electric vehicle market.

The i3 sedan is set to replace BMW’s current EV offering, the i4, as the company shifts its focus towards a more sustainable future. Originally scheduled to run until at least 2027, the i4 will be retired sooner than expected to make way for the i3. Despite a recent power increase for the top-tier M50 trim, the i4’s similarities to the i3 have made it redundant in BMW’s lineup.

One of the key differences between the i3 and i4 is the size, with the i3 being slightly larger in height and width but shorter in length compared to its predecessor. Pricing for the i3 has yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to start around $53,000, making it a more affordable option than the i4.

In terms of powertrain specifications, the i3 will come with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that generates 463 hp and offers a claimed range of 440 miles. This outperforms the i4’s most efficient version, which features a single motor rear-wheel-drive system with a 335 hp output and a maximum range of 318 miles.

While the i4 may have a more spacious liftback compared to the i3’s sedan trunk, BMW is considering future designs for the i4 that may feature a sportier coupe-like profile. For now, fans of the sleek profile will have to wait and see what BMW has in store for the i4.
