Amazon Reportedly Developing New Smartphone Focused on Alexa

After more than a decade since the Fire Phone was discontinued, Amazon is rumored to be working on a new smartphone that will center around its AI assistant, Alexa. According to a report by Reuters, the upcoming phone, codenamed “Transformer,” is set to feature Alexa prominently, although it may not serve as the primary operating system.

The development of “Transformer” is currently underway at Amazon’s ZeroOne group, headed by J Allard, known for his work on the Zune and Xbox at Microsoft. Allard’s team has been exploring various designs, including both smartphone and “dumbphone” concepts. Taking cues from the minimalist Light Phone, valued at $700, which boasts a black-and-white display and lacks an app store, the team is aiming for simplicity in design.

One of the key challenges faced by the original Fire Phone was app availability, a hurdle that Amazon may seek to overcome with “Transformer.” Sources familiar with the project have indicated a strong emphasis on integrating artificial intelligence capabilities into the device. This approach may lead to the adoption of mini apps similar to those found in ChatGPT, potentially sidestepping the need for a traditional app store.

While there is no definitive timeline for the release of “Transformer” or its potential price point, Amazon’s past experience with the Fire Phone, priced at $199, serves as a cautionary tale. Despite efforts to stay competitive in the AI space, Amazon faces the challenge of winning over users with its revamped version of Alexa. User feedback following the automatic upgrade to the LLM-powered Alexa Plus earlier this year highlighted concerns such as an influx of advertisements and slower response times to queries.
