Amazon has entered into a multi-year partnership with the NBA to introduce “NBA Inside the Game,” a basketball intelligence platform powered by AI. This platform, built on AWS’ AI infrastructure, will provide new statistics such as “Defensive Box Score” and “Expected Field Goal %” which analyzes shot likelihood based on various factors.

  • The “Gravity” metric will quantify the defensive attention a player attracts and the space they create for teammates, even without the ball.

These new statistics will be integrated across various NBA platforms and broadcasts, enhancing the overall fan experience.

Julie Souza, AWS’ global head of sports, views this partnership as an opportunity to showcase AI technology on a global scale through basketball.

With AWS becoming the official “cloud and cloud AI partner” of various basketball leagues, Amazon solidifies its position in sports streaming and data analytics.

Amazon’s involvement in sports streaming goes beyond distributing games through Prime Video, as it integrates technology into leagues’ data and operations. This partnership reflects Amazon’s commitment to innovation and technological advancement in sports.

Microsoft’s similar deal with the NFL highlights the growing importance of cloud technology in sports and entertainment.

Later this month, Amazon Prime Video will launch “NBA on Prime,” offering a new way for fans to enjoy basketball games globally.

“NBA on Prime” is a significant addition to Amazon’s sports streaming catalog, which includes a variety of live sports events.
