Runway Unveils $10M Fund and Builders Program for AI Startups
Runway Ventures into Shaping the Future of AI Video Models
Runway, a prominent player in AI video generation, is taking a step further by not only building AI video models but also influencing what is developed on top of them. The company recently announced the launch of a $10 million venture fund aimed at investing in early-stage companies involved in AI, media, and world simulation. Additionally, Runway introduced a Builders program that offers free API credits to seed to series C startups, indicating its desire to create an ecosystem around “video intelligence.”
With the introduction of its “general world models” in December, Runway is expanding its reach beyond creative tools into broader applications. By tapping into startups, the company aims to explore use cases that it may not be able to pursue independently. According to Alejandro Matamala Ortiz, co-founder and chief design officer of Runway, the goal is to leverage video to achieve video intelligence, unlocking a wider range of use cases across various industries.
The fund’s thesis is divided into three key areas:
- Supporting technical teams pushing the boundaries of AI and developing new architectural solutions.
- Empowering builders to create applications on top of foundation models, bringing AI to new use cases.
- Backing companies that are innovating in media creation, storytelling, and distribution.
Over the past year and a half, Runway has quietly supported several early-stage founders and companies, including LanceDB and Tamarind Bio. These startups are working on cutting-edge technologies that complement Runway’s offerings, such as real-time audio generation and AI-driven drug discovery.
According to Chang She, co-founder and CEO of LanceDB, the next generation of AI models will leverage multimodal data, combining video, audio, images, and text. LanceDB is focused on building the infrastructure necessary to enable this vision, with Runway being a key investor that understands the significance of this approach.
Techcrunch event
San Francisco, CA|October 13-15, 2026
Having raised nearly $860 million from investors like Nvidia and Qatar Investment Authority, Runway is valued at around $5.3 billion post-money. The company seeded the $10 million fund with support from existing investors and close partners, intending to provide funding of up to $500,000 for pre-seed and seed-stage startups.
Runway is not alone in its efforts to invest in early-stage companies. Other AI startups, such as OpenAI and Perplexity, have also launched venture funds to support emerging ventures. CoreWeave Ventures recently joined the fray, focusing on backing AI companies.
Alejandro Matamala Ortiz emphasized the importance of collaborating with new teams early on, as companies like Runway are still relatively small and cannot pursue every opportunity. By partnering with early-stage startups, Runway aims to foster innovation and drive the development of new applications and technologies.
Empowering Builders with Innovative Technology
Runway has launched a program for builders, offering eligible early-stage startups 500,000 API credits and access to Characters, a real-time video agent API powered by the company’s latest general world models. The Builders program aims to see how startups leverage this technology to create innovative solutions.
Alejandro Matamala Ortiz expressed enthusiasm for the potential applications of Characters in telemedicine and education. Given Runway’s expertise in entertainment, he also envisions the use of Characters in gaming and other entertainment experiences.
Interactive AI characters are gaining traction in various industries, with startups like Inworld and Charisma focusing on gaming and storytelling applications. Companies like StoReel are exploring AI-generated shows that offer direct user engagement, while Character AI has gained popularity for its conversational AI characters.
According to Ortiz, the future of the internet will be more personalized, immersive, and real-time, with technologies like Characters paving the way for new interactive experiences.
