Revolutionary BMW iX5 Hydrogen: Enhanced Flat Tank System for Unprecedented Range of 750 km
Breaking Down the BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage System
- The innovative Hydrogen Flat Storage system from BMW is a game-changer, featuring seven carbon-fiber reinforced chambers that can store a minimum of 7 kg of hydrogen and refuel in less than five minutes.
- Designed to fit seamlessly into the Gen6 battery floor package, the flat storage system allows the iX5 Hydrogen to share production lines with all X5 drivetrain variants, ensuring efficiency and flexibility.
- BMW’s ambitious goal is to launch the iX5 Hydrogen for wider production by 2028, equipped with cutting-edge Gen3 fuel cell technology for enhanced performance.
BMW has introduced a revolutionary hydrogen storage solution for the iX5 Hydrogen model, significantly extending its range to an impressive 750 kilometers (385 miles) without compromising interior space. Known as the Hydrogen Flat Storage system, this innovative design replaces traditional cylindrical pressure vessels with a more compact and integrated setup.
Gone are the days of separate cylindrical pressure vessels – the new system features seven interconnected chambers made of carbon-fiber reinforced composite material, housed within a single enclosed unit with a centralized valve. Rated at 700 bar, these chambers can hold at least seven kilograms of hydrogen and can be refilled in under five minutes.
Revolutionizing Packaging Design
The flat and integrated shape of the storage system is a strategic move by BMW, aligning perfectly with the Gen6 high-voltage battery floor geometry. This compatibility allows the hydrogen drivetrain of the iX5 to seamlessly integrate into the X5 platform without impacting passenger comfort or cargo space.
Dr. Joachim Post, the board member overseeing development, likened the packaging challenge to a game of “installation Tetris.” With BMW producing the new X5 in five distinct powertrain configurations on the same assembly line, precise dimensional constraints are crucial for the seamless integration of each variant.

On the technical side, the iX5 Hydrogen boasts the latest Gen3 fuel cell technology, offering improved efficiency and power compared to its predecessors. Coupled with a high-voltage battery and BMW’s advanced chassis software, the driving experience is optimized for performance and comfort, maintaining the X5’s renowned driving dynamics.
BMW’s target for the broader production release of the iX5 Hydrogen is set for 2028, marking a significant step towards mass availability. While the current generation has been undergoing trials in select regions, the upcoming launch aims to make hydrogen-powered vehicles more accessible to consumers. The challenge lies in the development of hydrogen refueling infrastructure to support this transition.
