This shared infrastructure allows various rural services, ranging from school transportation to dairy farming and local energy initiatives, to seamlessly integrate, securely share data, and collaborate without the need for individual community-specific systems.

Through the utilization of the Koulukyyti app, parents in Kemi and Tornio municipalities can easily track the safe arrival of their 6 to 15-year-old children at school. Bus drivers receive immediate alerts in case of absenteeism or address changes, eliminating unnecessary trips.

According to Seppo Ahola, the project manager of the Lapland pilot, the system represents a significant improvement over traditional methods such as manual pupil checklists or early morning WhatsApp messages.

Empowering Safer School Transportation in Lapland

Currently, around 90 children in Kemi and 120 in Tornio are benefiting from the app, with hopes for its expansion to more municipalities. Apart from the convenience and safety enhancements, the system also contributes to environmental preservation by reducing unnecessary travel, subsequently lowering energy consumption and emissions.
