Mercedes-Benz Introduces Innovative Shape-Shifting Steering Wheel

Mercedes-Benz is delving into a unique approach to enhance driving comfort by introducing a steering wheel that can adjust its size.

A recent patent outlines a revolutionary wheel featuring a minimum of three telescopic adjustment components on each side. These elements not only enable the wheel to move closer to or farther from the driver but also have the capability to modify its diameter.

A larger wheel may cater to individuals who prefer a more relaxed hand position or sit in close proximity to the wheel. Conversely, reducing the size could offer additional room for taller drivers or facilitate easier entry and exit. Mercedes also envisions that a smaller setting could deliver a more dynamic, race car-like driving experience.

The patent illustrations showcase a split, yoke-like design rather than the conventional circular wheel. Moreover, the wheel’s angle could be adjusted independently of the standard steering column height modification.

Mercedes envisions power-assisted motors overseeing the mechanism, although hydraulic or pneumatic systems are also under consideration.

While this innovative concept is intriguing, the likelihood of this adaptable steering wheel being featured in a production Mercedes remains uncertain, as is the case with any patent.
