Meta has recently unveiled a significant update for CarPlay users, adding a new dimension to its messaging app on the dashboard.

Although WhatsApp has technically been accessible on CarPlay since 2018, its functionality has been quite limited. It primarily served as a shortcut to summon Siri for composing messages or making voice calls, lacking a native WhatsApp interface. Users couldn’t browse recent conversations or have Siri read previous messages.

Recent indications hinted at a change in this setup when WABetaInfo discovered early support for a dedicated CarPlay app in the latest beta update accessible via TestFlight.

Upon opening WhatsApp from the system launcher, users are greeted with a dedicated chat list screen, showcasing recent conversations from the past 20 to 25 days.

WhatsApp wasted no time in launching the enhanced CarPlay integration. The App Store page for WhatsApp now highlights a “Major Update” featuring “WhatsApp for CarPlay.”

With version 26.13.74, WhatsApp’s CarPlay integration now rivals Apple’s Messages app. Users can view recent calls and chats, although reading messages on the screen is restricted for safety reasons. Chats and Calls are categorized into separate tabs, with a third tab for Favorites, making it easier to navigate conversations.

Siri can read back new messages, allowing users to reply or skip to the next one. The Calls tab displays a history of incoming, outgoing, and missed calls through WhatsApp. Favorites tab provides quick access to frequently contacted individuals.

To experience the new WhatsApp CarPlay features, update to the latest version and open the app on your dashboard. This update complements recent additions like Google Meet and ChatGPT to CarPlay.
