Electric Showdown: Comparing the BMW i3 and Mercedes C-Class EV Models Through Photos
The rivalry between the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a legendary one that has continued for many years. This competition now extends into the era of electric vehicles, with the introduction of the electric Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW’s i3 sedan from their Neue Klasse lineup. The new C-Class boasts a plethora of new technology, innovative takes on the popular “Hyperscreen,” and other notable features, making it Mercedes’ most competitive electric vehicle yet. But can it truly compete with the powerful electric BMW 3 Series?
Exterior Design:
The BMW i3 and electric C-Class, despite occupying similar positions within their respective brands, are designed with different customer preferences in mind. The BMW’s sharp lines and angular edges stand in stark contrast to the Mercedes’ more rounded design. However, the electric C-Class represents a departure from Mercedes’ previous electric vehicle designs by appearing more conventional. In the front, the electric C-Class features a prominent grille and iconic three-pointed star emblem. Overall, the car has a more mainstream look compared to some of Mercedes’ other electric models. The rear of the electric C-Class showcases lighting inspired by the radical AMG GT XX, drawing comparisons to vehicles like the mid-2000s VW Passat and Chevy Impala. Despite being slightly larger than the i3, the C-Class EV represents a significant step forward in Mercedes’ EV styling. The exterior design is a close match between the two, with the i3’s aggressive styling contrasting with the more contemporary look of the C-Class EV.
Interior Design:
The sleek exterior design is complemented by a simplistic and refined interior in the new electric C-Class. The cabin features a massive center screen known as the MBUX Hyperscreen, offering a generous 39.1 inches of touchscreen display. The interior lighting and circular air vents add to the overall aesthetic, with high-quality materials such as Nappa Leather and vegan options available. While some may prefer the screen-dominated cabin of the C-Class, others may lean towards BMW’s Neue Klasse design for its appeal and layout.
Performance:
The electric Mercedes C-Class debuts with the C400 4MATIC model, boasting 482 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. In comparison, BMW’s i3 xDrive50 offers 463 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. The C-Class EV’s larger size suggests that its performance, including a 3.9-second zero-to-60 time, will rival that of the i3. Range is a crucial factor for many buyers, with the C-Class offering an estimated 762 kilometers of range compared to the i3’s nearly 900 kilometers. The BMW i3 also outperforms the C-Class in charging capabilities, with the ability to charge up to 400 kW compared to the C-Class’s 330 kW.
Technology:
Mercedes introduces the Hyperscreen in the new C-Class, available in three different versions offering varying touch capabilities and information display. The C-Class includes advanced features such as rear-wheel steering and air suspension, enhancing the driving experience. Both vehicles offer similar levels of technology, including voice commands, phone integration, and app interactions. While Mercedes has made significant improvements in their electric offerings, whether the C-Class can surpass the i3 remains to be seen.
In conclusion, the electric Mercedes-Benz C-Class represents a significant advancement in Mercedes’ electric vehicle lineup. While it may not be an immediate rival to the BMW i3, the C-Class showcases impressive design, performance, and technology features. As both models evolve, future iterations and potential AMG and BMW M versions could change the competitive landscape. Which electric vehicle will come out on top? Only time will tell.
