Revolutionizing Automation Engineering: Siemens Unveils Cutting-Edge AI System
Siemens has recently unveiled the Eigen Engineering Agent, an advanced AI system specifically developed to plan and validate automation engineering tasks within operational settings.
This innovative system utilizes multi-step reasoning and self-correction mechanisms to autonomously execute tasks, seamlessly integrated within engineering platforms. This allows it to efficiently handle workflows from initial design all the way to validation.
Revolutionizing Engineering Workflows
The Eigen Engineering Agent is engineered to interpret project requirements, generate automation code, configure industrial systems, and refine outputs until predefined performance benchmarks are met. This includes crucial tasks such as programmable logic controller (PLC) programming, human-machine interface (HMI) setup, and device configuration, adhering to industrial standards for accuracy and reliability.
By connecting to Siemens’ cutting-edge Totally Integrated Automation Engineering platform, TIA Portal, the system gains access to project-specific data, enabling it to generate outputs aligned with existing system configurations, even in legacy or undocumented environments. It can effectively reference control logic, system hierarchies, and component dependencies, ensuring outputs match existing engineering standards without the need for manual translation.
Tasks are executed through a systematic workflow that breaks down engineering challenges into sequential steps, processes them methodically, and evaluates results against project requirements. The system iterates until outputs meet specified criteria before presenting them for engineer review.
Industry projections indicate a potential global shortage of up to seven million manufacturing workers by 2030, with certain sectors reporting one in five engineering roles remaining unfilled. Siemens emphasizes that the Eigen Engineering Agent accelerates task completion by two to five times compared to manual workflows, all while maintaining precision.
Integration into Industrial Operations
In pilot implementations involving over 100 companies across 19 countries, the Siemens system was successfully applied to standard automation engineering processes. Participating organizations included ANDRITZ Metals, CASMT, and Prism Systems.
Prism Systems leveraged the system to generate and import structured control language (SCL) code, significantly reducing execution time for these tasks. Similarly, CASMT utilized the system to automate device configuration, code generation, and HMI visualization in the development of production lines, resulting in reduced specialist hand-offs and shorter delivery timelines.
The Eigen Engineering Agent seamlessly integrates with Siemens’ TIA Portal, a platform with over 600,000 users, and is accessible as part of the company’s Xcelerator portfolio.
Addressing Industry Challenges and Workforce Gaps
Surveys conducted within manufacturing organizations indicate that while vast amounts of operational data are available, data quality and contextualization pose significant barriers.
In addition to general labor shortages, manufacturers face a scarcity of workers possessing the technical skills required to operate AI systems within industrial environments.
Initial implementations focus on automation engineering workflows, with the system designed for potential expansion into other facets of the industrial value chain. Siemens positions this development as part of broader initiatives to embed AI into industrial operations and software systems.
This release follows Siemens’ previously announced €1 billion investment in industrial AI, showcasing the company’s commitment to AI-based engineering and operational tools.
