The Advancement of AI Infrastructure: EuroHPC JU’s New AI Supercomputer in Sweden

The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) has recently finalized a procurement contract with Bull to establish an innovative AI supercomputer in Linköping, Sweden. This cutting-edge system is set to play a crucial role in the next phase of the Mimer AI Factory (AIF) initiative, significantly enhancing Europe’s AI infrastructure.

The AI supercomputer will be managed by the National Academic Infrastructure of Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS) at Linköping University. This strategic partnership aims to bolster the Mimer AIF by leveraging cloud-enabled supercomputing, expansive sensitive data storage, and advanced software layers to accelerate AI development across various industries.

With the deployment of this new AI supercomputer, there will be a substantial increase in computing capacity and service capabilities within the Mimer AIF ecosystem. This expansion is anticipated to reinforce Sweden’s position in Europe’s AI Factory network and enable the development of more advanced applications in fields such as healthcare, materials science, and autonomous systems.

Enhancing Mimer AIF’s Capabilities

The latest AI supercomputer is designed to elevate Mimer AIF from a support platform to a high-capacity AI development hub. By integrating compute, storage, and specialized expertise into a unified environment, the platform is tailored for production-level AI workloads. This includes robust infrastructure for managing sensitive datasets, a critical component for industries like healthcare and life sciences.

In addition to raw computing power, the platform offers advanced software tools and vertical expertise to assist organizations in designing, training, and deploying AI systems more effectively. Since its inception in April 2025, Mimer AIF has already supported over 200 European companies, aiding them in data preparation for AI utilization, accessing high-performance computing resources, and receiving technical training.

The primary goal of the new system is to scale these services rather than replace them, fostering continued growth and innovation within the AI ecosystem.

Sectors Poised for Growth

Mimer AIF’s sector focus encompasses four key areas: life sciences and healthcare, materials science, autonomous systems, and gaming. The AI supercomputer is expected to enhance capabilities across these sectors, enabling tasks such as generative models for structural biology, large-scale AI training for personalized medicine, and simulation-heavy development in autonomous technologies.

The gaming industry will also benefit from high-performance AI, supporting real-time rendering, behavioral modeling, and large-scale simulation environments.

Practical Applications of the AI Supercomputer

The structure of the system supports both experimentation and deployment, with a key focus on developing foundation models in collaboration with international partners. These models can be customized for specific industrial or academic applications, facilitating advancements in various fields.

Furthermore, the AI supercomputer enables generative AI in scientific research, particularly in areas like structural biology and drug design that require extensive datasets and compute power. Access to the platform is not limited to large institutions, with a primary target on startups and SMEs, as well as the broader research community.

Funding and Implementation

The expansion of the Mimer AI Factory is supported by a total budget of €29.76m, with funding evenly split between European and national sources. Half of the funding is provided by the Digital Europe Programme (DEP) through EuroHPC JU, while the remaining 50% comes from the Swedish Research Council.

Installation of the AI supercomputer is slated to commence in 2026, marking the transition of Mimer AIF into a fully scaled AI Factory within the European network. The overarching objective is to establish a distributed ecosystem of AI Factories across Europe, each contributing specialized capabilities while ensuring interoperability.

For Sweden, this expansion reinforces its position in the European AI landscape, providing companies and researchers with access to state-of-the-art infrastructure.
