Freelander Sets Sights on 25 Dealers for 2027 Launch in Australia
Freelander Targets 25 Dealers for Australian Launch in 2027
Freelander is gearing up for its Australian debut in 2027, with plans to establish a network of around 25 dealers. These dealers will include existing Chery retailers and premium-brand dealers who are currently in the running to be part of the launch.
Kym Mellow, the head of Freelander for Australia and New Zealand, revealed to CarExpert that the new dealer network may also incorporate retailers representing JLR brands.
“We are looking at having approximately 25 dealers at the launch,” Mr. Mellow stated, emphasizing the importance of including major capital cities in their plans.
The Australian introduction of Freelander will be spearheaded by the Freelander 8 large SUV, as previously announced.
While the brand’s plans for a local launch in 2027 have been confirmed, Mr. Mellow did not provide specific details regarding the launch timeline, appointed dealers, or locations.
Interest Grows as Freelander Prepares for Australian Entry
Since Freelander announced its plans for the Australian market, there has been a surge in inquiries from interested dealers. Mr. Mellow noted that many dealers, including premium brands like JLR, have expressed interest in participating in the venture.
Mr. Mellow emphasized that Freelander will establish its own dealer network for the Australian market.
Freelander, a collaboration between Chery and JLR, with JLR leading the brand’s design efforts, is set to launch in Australia in 2027. However, JLR will not be directly involved in the management of the Australian operations.
The brand is currently scouting for a local headquarters in Melbourne, where Mr. Mellow is assembling a dedicated local team. Recruitment is underway for key positions.
These positions include a national aftersales manager, along with roles in marketing, sales, and network strategy. Bringing in an aftersales manager early on is seen as crucial in establishing a strong customer experience before the official launch.
Planning for Success: Utilizing Existing Infrastructure and Building Customer Relations
Freelander plans to leverage Chery’s existing parts and vehicle distribution infrastructure instead of creating new systems from scratch.
Details regarding Australian servicing arrangements, authorized workshops for Freelander vehicles, and warranty terms are still pending confirmation.
While the international specifications of the Freelander 8 have been revealed in China, specific Australian specifications and pricing have yet to be disclosed.
The Freelander vehicles are manufactured at the Chery Jaguar Land Rover plant in Changshu, China. The factory upgrade to support the global rollout of the brand has been extensively covered by CarExpert.
