Homebridge 2.0 is here, and it speaks Matter

Revolutionizing HomeKit Device Support with Matter Integration

In the realm of smart home technology, there are two key use cases that are currently in focus:

The first involves addressing the gaps in HomeKit device support. Apple has adopted Matter as the preferred platform for introducing new device types, such as vacuums, into the Home app. However, these additions are made via Matter rather than directly through HomeKit. The primary objective is to bridge this gap by enhancing Homebridge plugins to offer comprehensive functionality for these device types. This goal is deemed highly attainable and is the immediate priority.

The second use case revolves around utilizing other Matter controllers in conjunction with Homebridge plugins. This integration would enable Homebridge plugins to be accessed from various Matter controllers, including popular applications like the Aqara app. However, this initiative is a long-term endeavor that will necessitate individual plugin updates to ensure compatibility. Consequently, the implementation of this feature will occur gradually over time.

The overarching objective remains the establishment of a unified platform that supports both HomeKit and Matter, bolstered by an extensive ecosystem comprising over 4000 plugins.
