Wizards of the Coast Misses Deadline for Recognizing New Magic: The Gathering Arena Developer Union

Wizards of the Coast has failed to meet a deadline for voluntarily acknowledging the newly formed Magic: The Gathering Arena developer union, as reported by the organizers of the union. Despite only responding to press inquiries thus far, the union workers remain confident in the inevitability of their recognition.

The developers recently announced their decision to unionize, aligning themselves with the Communications Workers of America under the name United Wizards of the Coast—CWA. This union aims to advocate for improved protections against layoffs, return to office policies, generative AI adoption, and mandatory crunch.

In a statement released by Magic: The Gathering Arena senior software development engineer Damien Wilson, he emphasized the broader impact of workplace structures prioritizing investor profit over employee well-being. Wilson highlighted the importance of unions in safeguarding the interests of workers in various industries.

Although the deadline for voluntary recognition by Wizards of the Coast has passed, there has been no direct response from the management to the union workers. The union remains resolute in their belief that their success is inevitable, citing the overwhelming support they have received from the public and the press.

Furthermore, the union is currently awaiting the outcome of a US National Labor Relations Board election petition for official union recognition, expected in the coming weeks. They urge supporters to continue advocating for the recognition of their union by WOTC and Hasbro.

This development in the games industry follows a trend of unionization efforts in recent years, with successful initiatives at studios like Heart Machine and id Software. The push for better working conditions and employee representation continues to gain momentum within the industry.
