Disney agrees to hire the majority of Character.AI’s workforce

Disney Offers Jobs to Former Character.AI Employees

Following the recent bankruptcy filing of chatbot startup Character.AI, Disney has stepped in to offer employment opportunities to many of its former employees.

Karandeep Anand, the former CEO of Character.AI, has transitioned to the role of Disney’s first Chief Technology Officer. Additionally, Disney has agreed to acquire some of Character.AI’s assets for a sum of $20 million.

A legal document uncovered by Bloomberg sheds light on the specifics of the deal between Character.AI and Disney. The agreement stipulates that Disney will extend job offers to at least 60 former Character.AI employees, representing the majority of the workforce, with an estimated annual compensation totaling $60 million.

The filing indicates that the majority of Character.AI employees who were offered positions at Disney have accepted the offers. However, it is worth noting that this agreement serves as a preliminary bid, leaving room for potential competing offers from other companies.

Despite boasting a substantial and active user base, Character.AI has faced financial challenges due to high operational costs and potential legal and regulatory issues. Notably, the company has been embroiled in a lawsuit filed by the mother of a teenager who tragically took his life after becoming fixated on one of Character.AI’s chatbots. Furthermore, government investigations regarding child safety concerns have added to the company’s woes.
