iOS 27 will let you choose between Gemini, Claude, and more for AI features: report

iOS 27 is set to introduce a new way for users to interact with third-party AI platforms, as per a recent report. This update will allow iPhone users to select from various third-party models offered by companies like Google and Anthropic. One interesting feature will be the ability to customize Siri’s voice based on the external AI model being utilized.

iOS 27 integration with AI apps

According to Bloomberg, Apple is calling this new functionality “Extensions” within iOS 27. In beta versions of iOS 27, Apple describes Extensions as a tool that “enables access to generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand, through Apple Intelligence features like Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground, and more.”

The report elaborates further:

Apple Inc. will offer users the option to choose from external artificial intelligence services to enhance features across its software suite, as part of its strategy to transform its devices into a comprehensive AI platform.

Users will have the flexibility to pick from multiple third-party AI models for tasks such as text and image generation and editing. This change is expected to be integrated into iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 later this year, according to sources familiar with the matter who requested anonymity due to the confidential nature of the plans.

Users will be able to select AI models that provide support via their respective App Store apps. For instance, Google and Anthropic could incorporate support for the Extensions system within their Gemini and Claude apps, respectively. Consequently, users can leverage these models to power features like Siri, Writing Tools, and more.

This development comes on the heels of Apple’s collaboration with Google to utilize Gemini for native Siri and Apple Intelligence functions. A previous Bloomberg report from March outlined how the Extensions system would work in tandem with Siri. Today’s revelation sheds light on its broader integration with Apple Intelligence features beyond the confines of the voice assistant.

Apple integrated ChatGPT into iOS 18, employing it as a fallback for general knowledge inquiries in Siri. ChatGPT is also accessible through platforms like Image Playground.

In a related development, iOS 27 will empower users to select distinct voices for each AI model:

Another notable update will allow users to choose different voices for Siri interactions powered by external models. Apple’s native system might use one voice for queries, while responses from third-party models, such as Anthropic’s Claude, could employ a different voice.

iOS 27 is slated to be unveiled at WWDC, commencing on June 8. Share your thoughts on Apple’s iOS 27 plans in the comments section below.
