- Exciting news from BMW as CFO Walter Mertl reveals plans for a China-specific X5 launch in the upcoming year.
- Chinese dealers have already had a sneak peek at the new X5, known by the codename “G78.”
- The revamped X5 for the Chinese market will feature cutting-edge driver-assistance systems developed in collaboration with Momenta.
The recent Beijing Auto Show showcased BMW’s commitment to the Chinese market, with the debut of three new models stealing the spotlight. Alongside the global release of the 7 Series/i7 facelift, the long-wheelbase i3 and iX3 were introduced as China-specific Neue Klasse EVs. More exciting launches are on the horizon, with the next-generation X5 set to receive a dedicated version tailored for Chinese consumers.
During a Q&A session following the quarterly earnings call, CFO Walter Mertl announced the imminent arrival of the China-specific X5 in 2027. The luxury SUV, equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems co-developed with Momenta, has already impressed local dealers. This collaboration with Momenta builds on BMW’s successful partnership with the tech company on the ADAS systems for the iX3 and i3 models.
Similar to the tailored Neue Klasse models for China, the upcoming X5 is expected to feature a longer wheelbase to cater to the demands of BMW’s largest market. This strategy follows the footsteps of the current “G05” model, which has been available in China since 2022 as the elongated “G18” variant.
Get Ready for the BMW X5 G65 and X5 G78
Anticipation is high for the global debut of the fifth-generation X5, expected this summer as the “G65.” The China-specific long-wheelbase version, known as the “G78,” is slated for a 2027 release. Speculation points towards production of the larger X5 at the Dadong plant, alongside the production of the first-ever fully electric iX5 in Shenyang.
Rumors suggest that the iX5 could boast the largest battery ever seen in an electric BMW, with a capacity of 148 kWh. While technical variances between the global and Chinese versions are anticipated, both SUVs are expected to share core similarities.
Although BMW has excluded long-wheelbase models from North America, the availability of LWB models has expanded beyond China in recent years. Whether this trend will extend to the “G78” remains uncertain. Meanwhile, the next-generation X7 “G67” will continue to be BMW’s sole larger SUV offering, with an upcoming electric variant in the form of the iX7.
The future looks promising for BMW enthusiasts, with over 40 launches planned by the end of 2027. The i3 Touring is part of this extensive lineup, although its availability in the Chinese market remains undecided. On the other hand, the potential introduction of the iX4 in China appears more likely.
In a bid to localize production, BMW has shifted most of its manufacturing to China, with a few exceptions such as the exclusive production of the 7 Series and iX in Dingolfing, and the XM in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
