BMW’s In-Car Ads: The Spider-Man Surprise
BMW drivers were taken by surprise this week when their vehicles started displaying an ad for the movie “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” on their in-car infotainment systems. The ad, which first appears as a banner on the screen and expands into a full-screen animated ad with music and light effects when tapped, has caused quite a stir among BMW owners.
The ad campaign, which started on July 27 and is set to run in over 70 markets until August 10, targets BMW vehicles built after July 2020 with the BMW Operating System 7 or newer. BMW initially announced the campaign in late July, describing the “exclusive Spider-Man animation” as a special surprise for BMW owners.
However, many BMW drivers have expressed their dissatisfaction with the unsolicited ad, describing it as “classless and tacky” and “disgusting.” Some have even compared the situation to the infamous incident when Apple forced a U2 album onto all iTunes users’ devices. Reddit users have called for an opt-out button for the ad, with some criticizing BMW for prioritizing advertising over more essential features and services.
Despite BMW’s claim that the Spider-Man animation is not an ad but part of a broader brand partnership with the film, some BMW owners remain unconvinced. The incident has sparked concerns that more ads may be on the horizon, with some users speculating that BMW may start running ads throughout the entire journey by moving the screen from the driver to the passenger side.
As the controversy continues to unfold, it is evident that BMW drivers are not pleased with the intrusive nature of the ad campaign. While BMW had previously promised not to sell advertising on its in-car displays, the latest development has left many owners feeling uneasy about the future of in-car entertainment.
