Revolutionizing the Electric Car Market: Introducing the MG 07 LiDAR Edition
MG has unveiled the MG 07 fastback sedan, set to compete with the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal in the Chinese market. This new model will be available for purchase in China by the end of 2026.
Details regarding the dimensions and powertrain specifications of the MG 07 have not been fully disclosed yet. However, it will be based on a new 800-volt platform and will offer both electric and plug-in hybrid options. The MG 07 will also be the first MG vehicle to feature LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, a feature previously seen on the IM Motors’ IM LS7 SUV.
The inclusion of LiDAR technology in the MG 07 marks a significant technological advancement for MG. This technology, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance driving capabilities, will set the MG 07 apart from other models in the lineup.
It is uncertain whether the MG 07 will be exported to other markets outside of China. In Australia, MG already offers the IM5 electric passenger car, sourced from the IM Motors brand.
MG vehicles currently available in Australia utilize a combination of cameras and radar for their advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). These systems, which include features like autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane-keep assist, contribute to the overall safety of MG vehicles.
The MG 07’s LiDAR unit is prominently positioned on the roof, showcasing its advanced technology. This unit is part of the Momenta R7 ‘Enhanced World Model’ (EWM) system, which uses AI to learn from past driving experiences.
LiDAR technology has been hailed as a game-changer in automotive safety, although Volvo recently removed it from their ES90 electric sedan and EX90 electric SUV due to supplier issues.
The MG 07 was recently spotted by CarNewsChina, revealing a high-performance variant with distinctive features like red brake calipers and unique door handles. Interior details have not been released, but spy shots suggest a modern design with a floating center touchscreen and a stylish steering wheel.
Priced competitively starting at under 200,000 RMB (~A$40,700), the MG 07 aims to attract customers in the Chinese market. This pricing puts it below the entry-level Tesla Model 3 in China.
In Australia, MG has established itself as a leading electric vehicle brand, ranking fourth in EV sales behind BYD, Tesla, and Kia. The MG 4 model has been particularly popular, outselling other EVs like the MG S5 SUV.
The growing popularity of electric vehicles in Australia is evident, with record market shares and rising fuel prices driving consumer interest. Brands like Ford and JAC are offering incentives to promote the adoption of electric vehicles over traditional fuel-powered models.
