BMW Skytop: A Luxury Coachbuilt Project

BMW has recently commenced customer deliveries of their highly anticipated Skytop, marking it as their most exclusive coachbuilt project since the iconic 3.0 CSL. The inaugural model was presented to Italian entrepreneur and racing driver, Andrea Levy, at the prestigious BMW Welt in Munich. Levy, who is known for her participation in the Ferrari Challenge Europe and CIGT Endurance 2025, expressed her excitement on Instagram, sharing her experience of receiving the unique vehicle.

Describing the moment as “amazing,” Levy was delighted to meet the individuals behind the development of the Skytop, a limited production masterpiece of only 50 units. The first Skytop will soon find its place in Turin, Italy, as part of Levy’s exclusive 777 Collection, showcasing a range of rare performance and design icons.

From Concept to Limited Production

Unveiled as a design study at the 2024 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the Skytop concept quickly garnered significant interest from collectors. Based on the BMW M8 Competition, the concept evolved into a short production run of 50 units, all of which were swiftly reserved.

The Munich delivery closely resembled the Villa d’Este prototype, maintaining its distinctive proportions, surfacing, and detailing. Notable features include a manually removable targa roof, crafted from two leather-wrapped panels that conveniently fit into a designated trunk compartment.

Although the pricing details were not disclosed publicly, sources estimate the figure to be around €500,000.

Design and Technical Highlights

The BMW Skytop draws inspiration from classic models such as the BMW Z8 and BMW 507, blending long-hood GT proportions with sleek, sculptural bodywork. A standout feature is the electrically operated winglets that replace traditional door handles, seamlessly integrating into the vehicle’s design.

Powered by the M8’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine and xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the Skytop is expected to deliver performance figures akin to the M8, boasting 617 horsepower and a rapid 0–100 km/h acceleration time of approximately 3.3 seconds.

Recent sightings suggest that the innovative winglet handle design will be featured in upcoming BMW models, signaling a shift towards incorporating this unique design element in higher-volume vehicles.

The Final Chapter of the 8 Series

As the BMW 8 Series production draws to a close, the Skytop symbolizes the culmination of an era for the flagship grand tourer. While the current variants are set to phase out by 2026, BMW has yet to confirm a direct successor. Speculations hint at a potential return of a Gran Coupe-style variant under the same badge post-2030, making the Skytop a poignant conclusion to the current 8 Series lineup.

Next Stop: Tokyo Motor Show

Although customer deliveries are underway, a formal public debut of the BMW Skytop is anticipated at the Tokyo Motor Show. Despite lacking U.S. homologation, reports suggest that at least one model may find its way to the East Coast through a private import.
