Explosive Growth: China’s AI Adoption Skyrockets to 515 Million Users in Just Six Months
The Surge of AI Adoption in China: A Rapidly Evolving Landscape
China has witnessed an unprecedented surge in AI adoption, as highlighted in a recent report by the China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC). The country’s generative artificial intelligence user base has doubled to a staggering 515 million within a mere six months, showcasing a remarkable growth rate of 36.5% in the first half of 2025. This meteoric rise solidifies China’s position as a dominant player in the global AI arena.
Demographic Insights into AI Users
An examination of 30,000 respondents across 31 provinces unveils interesting demographic trends among AI adopters in China. The majority of users comprise young and middle-aged professionals, with individuals under 40 years old constituting 74.6% of the user base. Moreover, 37.5% of users hold degrees from higher education institutions, indicating a strong presence of digitally savvy and educated individuals driving AI adoption in the country.
Preference for Domestic AI Models
Notably, the report underscores that over 90% of respondents favor domestic AI models, reflecting China’s strategic focus on technological self-reliance. With leading American models like OpenAI and Google DeepMind facing official restrictions in China, homegrown solutions such as DeepSeek, Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen, and ByteDance’s Doubao have gained immense popularity among users.
Global AI Landscape and Comparative Analysis
Despite limitations on US-based AI models, China has emerged as the world’s largest AI market. A study by Microsoft revealed that China’s AI user base surpassed 195 million in June 2024, showcasing a robust growth trajectory. In contrast, the United States maintained a relatively steady adoption rate of around 25% over the previous year.
Zhang Xiao, deputy director of CNNIC, anticipates further advancements in open-source AI, embodied intelligence, AI agents, and AI governance, underscoring China’s commitment to AI innovation.
Innovation and Patent Leadership
China’s AI prowess extends beyond user adoption to significant leadership in innovation, as evidenced by the country’s substantial number of AI-related patent applications. With 1.576 million AI-related patent filings as of April 2025, China accounts for 38.58% of the global total, showcasing a strong focus on research and development in the AI domain.
Strategic Policy Framework
China’s rapid AI adoption aligns with Beijing’s “AI Plus” initiative, which advocates for the widespread integration of AI technologies across society and the economy. Emphasizing self-reliance in the AI ecosystem, the government incentivizes domestic tech companies to develop competitive AI solutions, fostering a conducive environment for AI integration.
Implications for the Global AI Landscape
The exponential growth of China’s generative AI user base to 515 million users in six months signifies a significant milestone in the evolution of AI ecosystems. As China’s AI adoption accelerates, the global technology landscape may witness the emergence of distinct spheres of influence, centered around American and Chinese AI models.
As China continues to lead in AI adoption and innovation, the global AI landscape is poised for transformation, with implications for technological evolution, cross-border innovation diffusion, and global AI governance standards.
The upcoming months will shed light on the sustainability of this growth trajectory and the ability of Chinese AI platforms to meet user demands in a competitive and dynamic market.
