BMW ALPINA’s Electrifying Future: Electric Cars to Roll Out from 2027
The Future of BMW ALPINA: Electrification and Innovation
In 2027, BMW ALPINA is set to release its first car under full BMW ownership, offering both a V8 and electric powertrain options. The transition to electrification was a key factor in the Bovensiepen family’s decision to sell the ALPINA name to BMW in 2022. Tightening emissions regulations and the need for advanced software engineering resources made their position unsustainable as a low-volume manufacturer.
Andreas Bovensiepen, the former owner, emphasized their commitment to “no compromise,” which he believed was at odds with the electric age. However, BMW saw potential in the brand and acquired it, with Maximilian Missoni leading the design efforts for the electrified ALPINA models.
During a roundtable discussion at the 2026 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, Missoni revealed that ALPINA would offer both powertrain options to maintain technological openness. Customers could choose from a range of powertrains available in BMW vehicles, enhanced with ALPINA’s signature performance and luxury enhancements.
Exciting Developments: First Production Series BMW ALPINA in 2027
The upcoming production model from BMW ALPINA, based on the 7 Series and internally coded as the G72, is expected to offer multiple variants. This marks a departure from the previous single B7 model. The launch will feature a V8 powertrain, emphasizing ALPINA’s commitment to pure performance.
ALPINA boss Oliver Viellechner confirmed that an electric variant would follow, reflecting the brand’s acknowledgement of the need for non-combustion options in the market. The decision to embrace electrification was driven by the evolving automotive landscape, especially in markets like China.
While the Bovensiepen family faced challenges with electrification, BMW ALPINA now has the resources and support to innovate and build the next generation of luxury performance vehicles.
