Shay Shwartz: From Teenage Hacker to Cybersecurity Entrepreneur

Shay Shwartz has an intriguing story that begins with his early involvement in email phishing attacks as a teenager. However, after facing consequences for his actions at the young age of 16, Shwartz decided to redirect his cyber skills towards preventing cyber attacks rather than perpetrating them.

Over the next decade, Shwartz established himself in the cybersecurity field, working on significant projects for Israel’s defense and intelligence units, including contributions to the Iron Dome project. Eventually, he became part of Axis, a startup that was later acquired by HPE.

Despite his success in established cybersecurity roles, Shwartz harbored a desire to launch his own startup. Two years ago, he fulfilled this aspiration by founding Ocean, a cutting-edge email security platform designed to combat AI-powered attacks. Ocean recently emerged from stealth mode with an impressive $28 million in total funding, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and supported by other prominent investors.

While traditional cybersecurity vendors focus on detecting standard phishing attacks, Shwartz emphasizes the need for a different defensive strategy against AI-driven threats. He highlights the increased scale and sophistication of AI-enabled attacks, which can now target individuals with precision and efficiency.

Ocean’s AI technology enables thorough analysis of email content to identify fraudulent and impersonation attempts. The platform is already serving major clients like Kayak, Kingston Technology, and Headspace, processing billions of emails monthly.

Shwartz explains that Ocean has developed a specialized language model to rapidly assess emails, discern sender intent, and evaluate messages within the recipient’s organizational context. This proactive approach aims to enhance email security and protect users from potential threats.

Ultimately, Shwartz envisions Ocean as a virtual guardian for email inboxes, ensuring a safe and secure communication environment for users. By leveraging AI and innovative technologies, Ocean seeks to stay ahead of evolving cyber threats and provide effective protection against sophisticated attacks.
