Empowering the Next Generation: Insights from a Health Startup Founder
In the year 2020, Vanessa Rissetto, along with a team of four part-time dietitians, successfully generated $934,000 in revenue and $48,000 in profit by offering nutrition services to patients.
The team of dietitians went on to establish Culina Health, a virtual platform that has raised over $20 million and secured a $7.9 million series A funding led by Healthworx and supported by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield.
Reflecting on the success of Culina Health in 2020, Rissetto mentioned that venture capitalists began showing interest in her work.
Providing Superior Nutrition Services
Vanessa Rissetto serves as the co-founder and CEO of Culina Health, a virtual clinical nutrition service that enables patients to connect with registered dietitians for insurance-covered healthcare. Rissetto’s journey with Culina Health has been marked by challenges such as fundraising, building trust, and transitioning from a clinical dietitian to an entrepreneurial role in a nutrition services startup.
Although Culina Health was founded in 2020, Rissetto’s vision for the company began six years earlier. In 2014, while working as a clinical dietitian at Mount Sinai Hospital, Rissetto came across an article about a dietitian charging $10,000 for nutrition sessions. This sparked the idea that she could offer a better solution without charging exorbitant fees.
The concept lingered in Rissetto’s mind until the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 provided her with an opportunity to launch Culina Health. With telemedicine visits being reimbursed at the same rate as in-person visits, Rissetto found a new financial model for her venture.
Rissetto’s emphasis on trust in her clinical approach led to a significant portion of her patients coming through referrals from physicians who trusted her expertise.
Catalyst for Launch
The initial idea for Culina Health had been brewing in Rissetto’s mind for years, and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic provided the perfect opportunity to bring it to fruition. The reimbursement parity for telemedicine visits during the pandemic offered Rissetto a viable financial model for her virtual clinical nutrition service.
Despite facing challenges such as cash flow issues and personal health crises, Rissetto remained committed to the growth and success of Culina Health. The company’s focus on trust and science-based solutions garnered the confidence of both patients and investors.
Overcoming Challenges
Cash and Funding
Despite facing cash flow challenges due to slow insurance payments, Rissetto tackled the issue by learning the intricacies of fundraising. With persistence and dedication, she managed to secure investments, with CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield’s backing serving as a validation of Culina Health’s credibility.
Rissetto’s refusal to emulate competitors and her unwavering commitment to her clinical approach set Culina Health apart in a crowded marketplace.
Personal Challenges
Despite the rapid growth of Culina Health, Rissetto faced a personal health crisis with a breast cancer diagnosis in 2023. During this challenging period, the company continued to operate under the leadership of other team members.
Mary Matone, Culina Health’s Chief of Staff, played a crucial role in managing the company during Rissetto’s absence, highlighting the resilience and teamwork within the organization.
Competitive Threats
While Culina Health has successfully navigated various challenges, Rissetto acknowledges the competitive landscape in the wellness market, particularly with the emergence of new competitors and treatments. She emphasizes the importance of maintaining a strong position in the market despite increasing competition.
Inspiring Young Entrepreneurs
Rissetto shares her experiences to inspire aspiring entrepreneurs, urging them to have confidence in their ideas and work. She stresses the importance of clear communication, integrity, and perseverance in building a successful venture.
Her advice to young entrepreneurs is to articulate their vision effectively, stand by their work, and uphold the integrity of their business.
