Improving Apple’s Focus Filters: Addressing the Group Chat Blind Spot
With the introduction of iOS 16, Focus Filters have emerged as a promising feature. These filters allow users to block out distracting apps, websites, and notifications based on their selected focus. In the Messages app, for example, users can limit their interactions to only those contacts within their chosen focus.
However, there is a significant drawback in the implementation of Focus Filters in Messages that hinders its utility for many users.
Personally, I often find myself getting engrossed in conversations while working on my Mac. Initially, I attempted to combat this by closing the Messages app and removing it from my dock. However, this only led to me constantly checking my phone for new messages. Subsequently, I turned to focus filters for a solution.
Focus filters in Messages
For the most part, this approach proves effective. I can selectively choose a few individuals to communicate with while filtering out all other distractions. This goes beyond just notifications; in the Messages app, excluded contacts are entirely removed from the conversation list.
Despite the success of this strategy, there is a significant issue that remains unresolved: group chats. If a contact within your focus filter is part of a group chat, the entire group chat is displayed in your Messages app. As a result, I have had to exclude certain individuals from my Work focus whom I would prefer to keep included.
While the feature holds promise, there is room for improvement. Apple could enhance the granularity of group chat settings and perhaps integrate with Screen Time to create a more comprehensive digital mindfulness toolkit. Hopefully, the upcoming iOS 27 will address these concerns.
