The Impact of AI Features on Modern Smartphones

Over the past year, I have experimented with various AI features on my phone, including Gemini, to explore their utility beyond novelty. While AI features are now common in modern smartphones, many still come across as mere demos that fail to leave a lasting impression. To truly gauge their effectiveness, I dedicated a week to using AI features extensively, from photo editing to voice typing, to assess their practicality.

Testing AI Features on Samsung and Pixel Devices

Recognizing the variability in user experience, I tested AI features on both Samsung and Pixel devices to identify their strengths and weaknesses. The goal was to distinguish between features that enhance daily functionality and those that can be overlooked.

Initially skeptical of Pixel’s AI eraser, I was pleasantly surprised by its performance. In a practical scenario, I effortlessly removed unwanted objects from photos, achieving satisfactory results that impressed even discerning viewers. On the other hand, Samsung’s Generative Edit exhibited a more aggressive approach, resulting in noticeable artifacts in edited images, detracting from the overall quality.

Pixel’s Best Take feature, however, exceeded expectations by seamlessly creating group photos from burst shots with impressive accuracy. In contrast, Samsung’s Generative Edit fell short in maintaining image quality, especially in complex editing tasks.

Writing and Voice Typing Efficiency

While writing suggestions offered by AI assistants were helpful in refining work-related replies, voice typing emerged as a standout feature for its accuracy and adaptability. Gboard’s voice input showcased exceptional performance in noise-prone environments, streamlining the typing process with minimal errors.

Samsung Writing Assist demonstrated the ability to enhance message clarity by rewriting entire paragraphs, showcasing its potential for professional communication. These features, while not revolutionary, significantly improved productivity on mundane workdays.

Inconsistent Performance of Assistant Tasks

Despite excelling in basic functions like reminders and alarms, AI assistants struggled with complex tasks that involved multiple commands. Both Gemini on Pixel and Samsung’s Bixby faced limitations in executing multi-step requests, highlighting the importance of simplifying commands for optimal performance.

Unobtrusive Background Features

Among the AI features tested, Pixel’s call screening and battery optimization stood out for their seamless operation and tangible benefits. Call screening effectively identified spam calls, while battery optimization significantly extended device usage without compromising performance.

However, Circle to Search failed to deliver accurate results consistently, leading to its diminished utility in critical searches. Similarly, Otter’s transcription capabilities fell short in noisy environments, emphasizing the importance of location and noise conditions in transcription accuracy.

Retaining Practical AI Features

Following the week-long experimentation, certain AI features such as Magic Eraser, Best Take, and voice typing proved their worth and earned a permanent place on my device. Call screening and battery optimization also emerged as indispensable tools for enhancing daily productivity.

Conversely, features like Circle to Search and proactive suggestions were deemed less essential, emphasizing the need for practicality and accuracy in AI implementations. Ultimately, the effectiveness of AI features lies in their seamless integration into daily routines, with the most successful tools being those that blend into the background effortlessly.

While companies promote AI features as essential components of modern smartphones, my experience suggests that many features still lack the precision and utility required for widespread adoption. As technology continues to evolve, the focus should be on refining AI capabilities to deliver tangible improvements in user experience.
