Face ID on iPhone 17 Pro Max

Google’s initial attempt at 3D face unlock technology in 2019 fell short, but it wasn’t until the release of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro four years later that Android users finally experienced a true 3D solution. This advancement allowed users to authenticate payments and access banking apps solely through facial recognition.

Personally, this innovation was a game-changer for me, except for the times I tried to unlock my phone in low-light conditions. While Face ID continued to function flawlessly, the Pixel devices struggled significantly without adequate lighting. However, there may be a solution on the horizon.

Exploring a Software-Based Approach

Android Authority recently uncovered code within the beta version of Android 17’s upcoming QPR3 update that references “Face Active Illumination.” Although not definitive proof, additional code snippets found by the site mention terms like “dark,” “brightness scale,” and “bedtime,” suggesting a focus on enhancing face unlock functionality.

The anticipated solution is likely to be partially software-driven. Given that recent Pixel models lack the dedicated infrared dot projector found in iPhones, the system will probably rely on software to brighten the user’s face when external lighting is insufficient.

The most plausible scenario involves a feature that automatically detects low-light environments and prompts the user to illuminate the screen, providing sufficient light for facial recognition to operate effectively.
