Honda Ridgeline – report
Honda to Fill ute Gap in Portfolio with Mitsubishi Triton-Based Model
Reports suggest that Honda is looking to address a gap in its lineup by introducing a rebadged version of the Mitsubishi Triton in Southeast Asian markets, potentially as early as 2028. This move comes as Honda aims to compete in the popular ute segment, where it currently offers the US-built Ridgeline, a left-hand drive model with unibody construction.
The introduction of a traditional body-on-frame ute would position Honda against top-selling models like the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, as well as its donor vehicle, the Mitsubishi Triton, and other competitors such as the Nissan Navara.
The decision to source the Triton from Mitsubishi is seen as a strategic move to boost sales volumes in Southeast Asia, where the demand for utes is high. Additionally, this collaboration would benefit Mitsubishi by increasing production at its Thai factory.
Despite the failed merger between Honda and Nissan, reports suggest that Nissan is in discussions with Honda to supply vehicles from its Canton plant in the US. This partnership could see Nissan producing pickup trucks for Honda, potentially including a rebadged version of the American Frontier ute.
Honda’s interest in collaborating with Mitsubishi and Nissan reflects a trend of automakers partnering to expand their product offerings. In the past, Honda has rebadged vehicles from other brands, such as the Isuzu TF, to address market needs.
Collaborations between automakers are common in the ute segment, with models like the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok sharing platforms. The industry continues to see partnerships that allow brands to leverage each other’s strengths and resources.
For car enthusiasts looking to explore Honda’s range of vehicles, the brand’s showroom offers a diverse selection of models to suit different preferences and needs.
