Microsoft Enhances AI-Powered Office Features for Microsoft 365 Subscribers

Last year, Microsoft integrated its AI-powered Office features into Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions, but initially restricted access to the primary account holder only. However, in a recent development, Microsoft has announced its decision to extend the availability of Copilot and AI benefits to all Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscribers. This enhancement allows up to five additional users on a plan to leverage these advanced features, in addition to accessing Office apps and OneDrive storage.

Upcoming Changes to Microsoft 365 Subscription Plans

In a communication to Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscribers, as reported by The Verge, Microsoft has outlined the forthcoming modifications to subscription plans:

One notable change pertains to storage allocation. Previously, each account received 1TB of OneDrive storage. However, the new policy limits shared storage to 2TB across the entire plan. While Microsoft suggests this adjustment enhances storage flexibility for scenarios where a user surpasses the 1TB threshold, it also appears to serve as an avenue for promoting additional OneDrive storage sales.

Furthermore, Microsoft has indicated that existing subscribers in eligible markets may qualify for transitional bonus storage. The company is also committed to providing support to families with high storage utilization.

Implications of the Changes

The recent announcements come on the heels of the one-year anniversary of the launch of Microsoft 365 Premium. This premium offering combines the features of Copilot Pro and a Microsoft 365 Family subscription for $19.99 per month. The introduction of “more flexible AI usage” raises the possibility of increased costs for subscribers utilizing Copilot extensively, depending on their usage patterns.
