Moving On: The Future of Smartphone Security
After reluctantly switching to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 two months ago, I found that Samsung’s One UI 8 software offered key features that helped me control my doomscrolling habits.
One of the expected compromises with foldable smartphones like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the absence of an under-display fingerprint sensor. Instead, Samsung integrated a physical fingerprint sensor into the power button, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
Having used the Galaxy Z Fold 7 for a while now, I have come to the conclusion that under-display fingerprint sensors are simply not up to par. The reliability and speed of physical sensors far exceed that of under-display ones.
One of the main drawbacks of under-display fingerprint sensors is their lack of reliability, especially when fingers are sweaty or when the screen is wet. This has been an ongoing issue that has not been properly addressed by manufacturers.
Apple’s decision to stick with Face ID instead of introducing under-display fingerprint sensors speaks volumes about the quality and reliability of face unlocking technology. Face ID provides a fast and secure alternative that works even in low-light conditions.
Modern face unlocking methods, such as Face ID, are far more secure and reliable than basic face unlock methods that can be easily fooled. Android phone makers are starting to catch up with Apple by implementing similar technology in their devices.
Physical fingerprint scanners have come a long way in terms of design and functionality. They are now seamlessly integrated into power buttons, providing a discreet and convenient way to unlock phones.
Switching from under-display fingerprint sensors to physical sensors can result in significant cost savings for manufacturers. Intel Market Research suggests that physical sensors are 25-30% cheaper to manufacture.
After eight years of under-display fingerprint sensors, it is clear that the technology has not lived up to its potential. With better alternatives available, such as physical sensors and secure face unlocking methods, it may be time to move on from under-display sensors.
