Kemuri: A New Yokai-Hunting Action Game

Kemuri is an upcoming third-person action game developed by a team led by Ikumi Nakamura, a former Tango Gameworks developer known for her work on Ghostwire: Tokyo. Set in a sprawling vertical city, players take on the role of an athletic yokai hunter, exploring a world filled with hidden otherworldly beings. The game features a variety of playstyles, including fisticuffs, archery, and magic, offering a diverse and engaging gameplay experience.

One of the standout features of Kemuri is its unique approach to yokai hunting. Players can scry these mystical creatures by forming a “foxwindow” with their thumb and index finger, revealing them to be transformed into “Possession Apparel”. The game also introduces a class system, allowing players to customize their playstyle and strategy. With a mix of real-life folklore and original creations, Kemuri promises to deliver a thrilling and immersive gaming experience.

In addition to its single-player mode, Kemuri offers traditional co-op gameplay for up to three players. The game’s online features hint at a mysterious networking system that adds a layer of intrigue to the gameplay experience. As Nakamura explains, “Even in single-player, you are never truly alone in this city,” suggesting a seamless integration of multiplayer elements into the game’s narrative and world.

The cooperative gameplay in Kemuri is designed to be a collaborative effort, with players taking on distinct roles within the team. This approach adds a unique dynamic to the gameplay, emphasizing teamwork and coordination. The game’s release is scheduled for 2027 on PS5, with a confirmed PC version also in the works.
