Weis Markets adds Instacart AI-powered shopping carts to stores

Weis Markets Introduces AI-Powered Shopping Carts in Pennsylvania Stores

Weis Markets, a Pennsylvania-based grocery chain, is enhancing the shopping experience by incorporating Instacart’s innovative Caper Carts in select stores. These smart carts bring a range of digital features to the grocery aisle, including digital coupons, loyalty benefits, and personalized recommendations for repeat purchases.

Collaborating with Instacart, Weis Markets is rolling out these cutting-edge carts equipped with cameras, certified scales, location systems, and touchscreens to streamline the shopping process.

The Caper Carts utilize advanced technology such as basket-facing camera sensors, outward-facing cameras, certified scales, and location-tracking systems to facilitate item recognition and checkout functions. This system combines on-cart edge computing with cloud AI trained on a vast database of over 1.6 billion online grocery orders.

Customers shopping at Weis Markets can now track their spending in real-time using the cart screen. Additionally, they have access to location-based digital coupons directly from the cart, enhancing their savings.

By signing up for a Weis Rewards account through the cart, customers can unlock exclusive loyalty benefits while shopping. They can also utilize the Buy It Again feature to easily repurchase items they have bought before.

Weis Markets and Instacart have a history of collaboration in the online grocery space. In 2023, they joined forces to offer same-day delivery from 133 locations across Pennsylvania, New York, and Delaware.

Expansion of Caper Cart Deployment by Instacart

Weis Markets’ introduction of Caper Carts adds to Instacart’s broader rollout of these smart carts, now present in over 100 cities across 15 states.

Caper Carts are available in numerous retail banners, including Kroger, Schnucks, and Wakefern banners like ShopRite and Fairway Market.

Previous deployments of Caper Carts have yielded positive results, with reports indicating that these smart carts accounted for more than 10% of sales on busy days at certain stores.

Greg Zeh, Weis Markets’ Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, lauds the carts as a key component of the company’s commitment to enhancing the shopping experience. He emphasizes features such as real-time spend tracking and on-cart coupons.

Instacart views this partnership as an extension of Weis Markets’ adoption of digital solutions within stores. David McIntosh, Instacart’s Chief Connected Stores Officer, notes that Caper Carts seamlessly integrate in-store and online data.

Integration of AI in Checkout Operations at Weis Markets

Weis Markets has also implemented AI technology in self-checkout processes. The chain completed a chainwide rollout of Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions’ ELERA Security Suite across self-checkout lanes, featuring advanced features like produce recognition and loss prevention tools.

This system leverages edge AI for on-device processing, enhancing efficiency and accuracy at checkout. As of December 2025, it was operational across all 199 Weis locations, with over 94% of customers utilizing the produce recognition feature.

Exploring AI Applications Beyond Checkout in the Grocery Sector

Albertsons Companies have introduced an AI-based quality control tool for produce inspection, aimed at identifying defects in fruits like strawberries and grapes before they reach shelves. This tool improves quality control consistency and expedites decision-making processes.

The tool, developed in-house by Albertsons’ technology and supply chain teams, utilizes computer vision technology to enhance produce inspections across the company’s store brands.
